Travel Information
Public Medieval Workshop (October 2024)
Driving
Blacksburg is easily accessible via I-81. It’s about 4 hours from Washington, DC, about 3 hours from Charlotte, NC, and about 2 hours from Charlottesville, VA. Parking is included in most hotel’s lodging rates. If you are planning to drive onto campus, you’ll need a guest pass though.
Flights
The nearest airport is Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport. There is good service from Charlotte, Atlanta, DC, and some other hubs.
The airport itself, however, is in Roanoke and so about a 40 minute drive from the Virginia Tech campus. There are airport shuttles, but we can also try to arrange a pickup (me or a colleague). Please contact Matthew Gabriele directly if you think you’ll need a ride.
Hotels
For those planning their own lodging, we have secured a reduced (“government”) nightly rate at the Inn at Virginia Tech. Please use this link and you’ll receive a reduced rate. This rate is much cheaper than other hotels in the area for the weekend, the location has free parking, and it also provides a shuttle to elsewhere on campus (though, if the weather’s nice, it’s a pleasant walk to the Workshop locations).
Other hotel options are of course available though. You can of course stay anywhere, but the following are close to campus, so we might suggest:
